Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world says farewell to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
