Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the property near the city of Verona to carry out an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died belonged to the Italian military police.

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who fled after the explosion was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the scene showed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the residence was subject to an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents caused the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno told the media.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also located at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

He believed the explosion had taken place on a level above the access point and informed the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.

Neighbor Statements
