When a client comes to counselling sessions, they usually seem calm and set to commence the day. Yet after seeing this person for an extended period, I'm aware the truth exists behind an orderly exterior.

This individual reveals that the previous night, they'd served themselves "just one drink" to relax after an exhausting day. One glass became a second, followed by even more. This is a habit they've grown used to; a quiet ritual that enables the individual "disconnect" away from the overwhelming thoughts that overwhelm their consciousness when daily life ultimately winds down.

Increasing Pattern: Relying on Drinks to Cope With Worry

This story represents what I have been observing more and more often among clients. As a psychotherapist, it's clear a significant pattern: an increasing amount of people who are using substances to handle their mental health concerns.

Data indicates that around a significant portion of people who drank drinks did so to alleviate tension and a substantial percentage to manage anxiety.
