Fireworks along with a Toast for Life: Israeli Citizens Delight over Agreement Bringing Back Hostages

The declaration regarding a deal projected to result in the release captives detained in the Gaza Strip for more than two years has generated joy and comfort throughout Israel.

An organization that has advocated for the return of Israeli hostages held in Gaza voiced ā€œdeep appreciationā€ for what it called a ā€œlandmark achievementā€.

The agreement—still requiring agreed upon Israel’s war cabinet—will see the release of 20 hostages alive as well as the remains of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from Gaza.

To date, 148 captives have come back—largely through previous ceasefire deals—51 sets of remains have been recovered and eight hostages were freed by rescue.

Celebratory Moments at Hostages Square

Jubilant scenes took place in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals gathered ahead of the deal being signed.

The gathering started applauding and moving to music under US and Israeli flags—a female attendee holding up a placard saying: ā€œWe love Trump.ā€

ā€œThis is a wondrous day,ā€ the woman said.

A different person, Yael, aged 50, wept as she watched the people celebrating.

ā€œI am thrilled—it is such a comfort,ā€ she stated. ā€œWe must witness them come back home to their loved ones.ā€

Families Celebrate with Fireworks

The mother and sister of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker lit fireworks to mark the news that he would be returned home.

ā€œThey’re coming back!... Matan is coming home!ā€ Einav Zangauker exclaimed while holding her daughter.

Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: ā€œMy son, you are returning home.ā€

The delight could be felt throughout the avenues in Tel Aviv after the announcement.

Released Captives Offer Prayers and Raise Glasses

Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then toasting ā€œL’chaimā€, which means ā€œto lifeā€. She has been campaigning for the release of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.

Their brother Liran Berman posted: ā€œMy Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You are coming back.ā€

Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, and her body found in an underground passage in Gaza nearly a year after. He has been joining other captives’ relatives in advocating for a deal which ensures the return of all those still detained in Gaza.

ā€œI can’t quite believe this is real. We’ve been waiting for such a long time and now it’s here,ā€ he expressed.

He said he was ā€œshatteredā€ that his cousin would not be among those coming back home but was ā€œglowing with joyā€ for the families of the captives who are at last coming back.

Eitan Horn was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel together with his sibling.

Guarded Hope from Family Members

Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she experienced as if she were in ā€œa dream stateā€.

ā€œWe’re more than grateful to the President and everything he has accomplished for us. It seems that this could be the beginning of the end of this nightmare, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than ever,ā€ she commented.

But she cautioned that it was still too soon to rejoice.

ā€œBefore the final captive is here, we’re not opening the bubbly. We will continue struggling... until it’s over,ā€ she affirmed.

ā€œNumerous events can happen up to the final instant which is why we’re being so, so careful. We simply wish to thank everyone who participated in the work and ensure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only once the last captive is back home.ā€

Eitan was captured from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel together with his sibling Iair, who was freed from detainment through a truce agreement earlier in the year.
