Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by US Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the land is built upon, featuring a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
Blackstone has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
