Pat Bamford Signs With Sheffield United Despite Leading Abusive Songs Targeting Manager Chris Wilder
Patrick Bamford has joined the Championship side just seven months after leading disrespectful taunts directed at their manager, Wilder.
The 32-year-old forward, a free agent since leaving Leeds United, has agreed to a agreement with the Championship strugglers until January. Bamford's seven-year career at Elland Road finished amicably this past summer.
One of the player's final notable acts as a Leeds player included starting abusive songs regarding Wilder during the club’s success festivities in April. Now, the one-cap England international is set to play for Wilder as Sheffield United's boss looks to pull the team he loves away from the drop zone.
Past Conflict Involving Bamford & the Manager
Both men had previous conflict before Leeds won promotion to the top flight last season and United were defeated in the promotion decider by Sunderland. The manager called Bamford as a "muppet" back when the situation was different in 2018-19 and the Blades won automatic promotion whereas Leeds United missed out in the promotion playoffs.
Making Amends and Looking Ahead
All appears to have been put behind them with Sheffield United, the Championship’s least productive attack, in desperate need of improvement in attack and Bamford looking to resurrect his career.
The Wilder chant gained traction this spring. A repentant Patrick and the Leeds manager, Farke, called Wilder the following day.
Wilder commented back then: “Spoke with Pat recently and I’ve no problem at all with that. I’m not sure regarding the words used from a fellow professional! But I appreciated and respected him calling me.
“We had 20 minutes and the same again I spoke to Daniel as well and we had a half-hour chat with him and he is a great person, a top guy. Back in my playing days we used to give it and take it and that’s an integral part of football at every level, even on Sunday league. I have no problem at all. I'm fine with the situation and I told him that to Patrick.”
