Preparations for Putin-Trump Meeting Delayed Shortly After Budapest Negotiations Announced

Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has declared.

This past week the US president indicated he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was planned for this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a meeting was not "needed".

The administration withheld further information on why the talks had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting during a call with Putin, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with those familiar suggesting the president had pushed him to give up extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

However, on this week the American president embraced a ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the war on the current front line.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he stated.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against halting the present battle positions.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, implying that pausing conflict would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict demanded attention, Lavrov said, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of maximalist demands that include the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the only topic that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently came ahead of rumors that the US was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The conversation concerning the missiles had turned out to be a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he added.
