The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress forged from the past of the villain Henry. Their quest for freedom in episode 6 has them witness again a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the means to overcome him permanently.
Heads Up: This article details significant events for the second part of the final season.
The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.
There, they witness a child version of Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the trauma involved more than a simple act of survival.
In keeping with mysteries this season, the full story behind the encounter originates in the stage play The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research
The play reveals the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a vessel into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. The man in the cavern is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Based on what is known about his research, the case most likely held some of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the container could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The prequel shows that the boy ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.
The Power of Fear
The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he commands the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
