The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will Conclude... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates about Pluribus. He is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Has Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We have some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
